A study needs its name, method and findings attached
One costly, common mistake: remembering only a study's headline conclusion, without the researcher, method or findings behind it. The higher mark bands specifically reward that level of detail, and a precisely recalled study will consistently beat a vague version of the same point.
Evaluate the actual study, not studies in general
Good evaluation means genuine methodological critique: sample, ecological validity, ethical considerations, alternative explanations, applied specifically to the study or theory you're discussing. A generic list recycled across every study regardless of fit isn't evaluation, it's padding.
Applying psychology to a scenario
Work out which specific theory or study the scenario is actually testing before you start writing. Use the scenario's own details in your answer. And link your application explicitly back to named psychological research, not a common-sense explanation that happens to sound plausible.
Clinical psychology connects back further than you'd think
This unit often rewards linking clinical concepts back to the research methods and biological or cognitive content from earlier in the course. Treat it as entirely separate and you'll miss connections that strong answers make use of whenever the question allows it.
Where marks quietly disappear
Watch for confusing similar studies under pressure, evaluating in generic terms that don't actually engage with the study being discussed, and describing behaviour in everyday language instead of the correct psychological terminology.
