Same two papers at HL and SL, different depth
IB Physics HL and SL sit the same two papers — multiple-choice and data-based questions, then short and extended response — with HL covering the same core topics in greater depth plus additional HL-only content. Check your syllabus carefully for exactly which content is HL-only rather than assuming full overlap.
Data-based questions test interpretation, not just recall
The data-based section of Paper 1 tests applying physics principles you already know to unfamiliar data and graphs — the interpretive skill matters as much as content knowledge here. Practising with unfamiliar data sets, including reading graphs and identifying trends and uncertainties, is high-value revision time.
Calculations and uncertainty
Multi-step numerical questions carry method marks available even when arithmetic goes wrong, provided your working and units are shown clearly. Uncertainty calculations (absolute, percentage, and combining uncertainties across a calculation) recur across topics and reward mechanical, practisable skill.
Extended-response questions
- Build a full chain of physical reasoning, not just a correct final statement — "explain" questions are marked on the reasoning steps.
- Show every step of a calculation, including the equation before substituting values.
- Check your final answer's order of magnitude for physical plausibility.
The Internal Assessment
Physics IA success depends on choosing a research question that's genuinely investigable with the equipment and time you actually have access to — an ambitious-sounding question you can't rigorously execute and analyse scores worse than a modest, well-executed one.
Common content traps
- Sign errors in vector-based mechanics and field calculations.
- Confusing similar concepts across topics (e.g. different types of radioactive decay or field analogies).
- Incomplete explain-style answers missing the reasoning chain the markscheme rewards.
